Becoming a Successful Virtual Assistant – Part 1

Many Virtual Assistants start out in their businesses by working towards the finish line of what they perceive to be a successful VA business. They will research online what everyone else is doing and strive to achieve something very similar. They will spend time deciding what services they will offer, how they will offer them and going about finding the right clients. But before this process really starts, you should begin by defining what success really means to you. You need to drill down and establish the type of success that you want and how you want to achieve it.

Successful does not necessarily have to mean the largest or most profitable VA business. It could be a business that fits around your lifestyle, or one that develops a fantastic reputation within a niche market.

It is also important to understand that there are several levels or models of virtual assistant businesses you can operate, from the one-man-band to the office-based team. These can follow in sequence as you grow, or you can start with your preferred business model in mind and develop that to its full potential.

Tips for Successful Blog Set-up

Have you realised that it is time to add a blog to your website, but are not sure how to go about it? Here are a few tips to help you:

1. Choose an easy platform
Choose a platform you are comfortable using and one that is simple and user-friendly. Some people swear by Typepad; my personal favourite is WordPress.

2. Install it on your web space
Make sure that you can install the software on your own web space – ie, under your domain name. This is important, as search engines like new content, such as that provided by regularly updated blogs, and if it is hosted on the software supplier’s web space but not yours, your website will not benefit.

3. Set up MySQL database
Make sure you have the facility on your hosting package to have a MySQL database. This comes as standard on many, but not all, hosting packages. You will need it in order to install and operate your blog. So, if you do not already have MySQL, ask for it to be installed.

Setting up as a Virtual Assistant: The Basics

When you first make the decision to start out as a Virtual Assistant and run your own business, it can seem a little overwhelming with what you need to do to actually get started.

Before you even think about marketing to attract clients, you need to decide on some basics first.

Company Structure
There are three main ways to set yourself up in business and I recommend you seek the advice from a qualified and reputable Accountant to get advice that is tailored to you.

Sole Trader
This is quite an easy route to set up in business, you just need to register with HM Revenue & Customs as self employed and you are off. Why not look at their website for more information at www.hmrc.gov.uk.

Limited Company
This is the other most common route for a VA and leaves a lot of flexibility for the future depending on your business goals and aspirations.

Visit Companies House website at www.companieshouse.gov.uk for more information and you can either file the relevant forms yourself or use a Company Formation Agent to do it for you.

Partnership
You may decide to set up with a business partner (a trusted friend, associate or family member). I recommend that you consult with a solicitor to draw up a partnership agreement to ensure that all parties know exactly where they stand.

Bank Account
A bank account is a must for your business to ensure that all expenses are kept separate from your household and personal accounts.

Why not have a look at the comparison websites (such as www.moneysupermarket.com) to compare the different types of accounts available to you depending on your requirements.

VAT Registration
Most VA businesses will not need to register for VAT as the current threshold is set at £64,000. However, you should talk to your Accountant to see if you want to voluntarily register as it may be a pre-requisite for dealing with larger companies.

Each VA business is unique and you need to do what is right for you and nobody else!
